“One who is full loathes honey, but to one who is hungry everything bitter is sweet.”

My six year old has been asking for all the toys since he was very small. His love language seems to be a cross between quality time and gifts. He once told me that for Christmas he wants all the Pokémon toys in the whole world. After further investigation that is exactly what he was expecting. We had a a talk that day and many days since about having enough and children who have nothing. Still it is very difficult for my little knights to donate, or even sell, their toys or to be satisfied with what they have (which is a lot!)
How often are we like little children though, wanting more and more. When the new iPhone comes out, suddenly our older model just isn’t good enough. I, personally, always “need” more craft supplies and books (oh and kitchen gadgets). However, I find that, first of all, the satisfaction for me is often quickly gone. Secondly, All too often my new craft supplies sit in a large pile of good intentions, and dresses hang in my closet with tags. The amount of books I’m trying to read at one time is ridiculous. And coming back to my little knights, the amount of toys we have to put away is overwhelming to all of us.
I’ve discovered something recently. When I’m spending time with my boys- playing, learning, reading, just building our relationship, conversations are less about wants and more about what matters most. In the same way, when I fill my created hungers with God, putting my relationship with Him first, I am seeking less after stuff and activity. I am able to just be, and more of life seems sweet than bitter.
